Anyone interested in becoming a Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) offered by Scrum Alliance, needs to fulfil the following requirements –

  • The first step is to attend a Certified ScrumMaster workshop conducted by a Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST®) approved by Scrum Alliance. Usually, the workshop is a 2 day long (or 14-16 hour) in-person course or live-online course taught by a CST. Till recently, a 2-day long classroom training was the only available option. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Scrum Alliance has temporarily approved CSTs to conduct live-online classes so that participants can attend the CSM training from the safety and comfort of their homes without needing them to attend physically. The CSM training will teach the attendees about the Scrum framework and how to become a successful Scrum Master.
  • After the training, the candidate needs to successfully clear the online CSM exam. The CSM exam will assess the candidate’s understanding of the CSM® Learning Objectives. Upon successfully passing the CSM test, the candidate will be offered the title of CSM by Scrum Alliance and the candidate will be able to download and print the CSM certificate.

Yes. It is mandatory to attend a CSM workshop conducted by a CST even if you have years of experience working in Scrum environment.

No, the CSM test is not intended to be a substitute for formal Scrum training from Scrum Alliance®. Even if you have years of experience working in Scrum domain or have attended prior training with a different certifying body or in your workspace, it is a mandatory requirement to attend a CSM training designed and conducted by a CST based on CSM Learning Objectives.

CSM certification exam is an online exam. You do not need to visit any physical exam center to take the test. You can take the CSM test from the comfort of your home or from any location. After you attend a Certified ScrumMaster course, you will receive a welcome email containing a link to activate your Scrum Alliance® certification account where you will be able to complete the CSM test. After receiving the initial welcome email from Scrum Alliance that contains the account activation link, you will have 90 days to complete the CSM test for free. You will get two free attempts to pass the CSM test. If you fail the test twice or complete it after 90 days, you will be prompted to pay a USD 25 test attempt fee.

Yes, the CSM test is available in several languages. It can be taken in English, Spanish (Castilian), Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Danish, Czech, and Russian.

The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification from Scrum Alliance can only be attained after attending in-person classroom training or instructor-led live-online training. There is no self-learning online course option in CSM. Scrum Alliance does not approve self-learning online course option for CSM certification. Till recently, the primary route to acquire CSM certification was by attending a 2-day face-to-face CSM classroom training. Now, due to coronavirus pandemic, you can do so by attending a live-virtual class as well.

You do not need to pay the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) exam fee separately. The exam is included in the CSM course.

The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) certification exam contains 50 questions and you need to answer 37 out of the 50 questions correctly within the 60-minute time limit to pass the exam.

The Certified Scrum Master (CSM) certification exam is a non-proctored online exam. That means no one will monitor your exam when you take it and you can refer to any material if you want to. Since the test needs to be completed within 1 hour, it is not recommended to look through any material online. Also, once you attend our CSM training, you won’t need to refer any material to pass the CSM test.

The link to the CSM live-online training is sent to the attendees couple of days before the program starts. If someone enrolls in the last minute (subject to availability of seats), the link will be sent you before the training starts. Certified ScrumMaster Certification & Exam

There are no eligibility criteria set for the Certified ScrumMaster certification. Any professional looking to further his career in management can attend the course and attempt the test. However, each participant is expected to have some basic knowledge of Agile/Scrum. We recommend reading the Official Scrum Guide prior to attending the CSM workshop.

Following are the steps involved in the certification process:

  • Attend a two-day CSM training course conducted by a Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST®) or receive in person coaching from a Certified Agile Coach (CAC) for a minimum of 25 hours
  • Upon completing the two-day (16 hour) CSM course, the trainer will create an account for you on Scrum Alliance website, where you will be able to take the CSM test. The CSM Test is a non-proctored online test and you will be able to take the test online from any computer in the world from the comfort of their home, work, or other location.
  • Once you pass the exam you will be certified as a CSM. Also a CSM license agreement needs to be accepted and the Scrum Alliance membership profile needs to be completed.

CSM Exam Format:

  • 50 multiple-choice questions
  • Time limit is 1 hour
  • Passing score is 74%
  • Non-proctored online exam
  • You will not be able to pause the test, but questions can be bookmarked to answer later during the 60 minute time limit.
  • Test Language: English, Spanish (Castilian), Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Danish, Czech, and Russian.

The certification cost is included in the price of this course, hence you need not have to pay anything extra for the certification/examination. After receiving the initial welcome email from Scrum Alliance that contains the account activation link, you will have 90 days to complete the CSM test for free.
