Before enrolling for the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP®) prep course, it is always recommended to first check whether you are eligible to take the PMI ACP exam. If you are eligible to take the PMI ACP prep course, then you will be also be eligible to take the ACP certification exam.

Education

  • At least a secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree, or global equivalent).
  • If you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a PMI-accredited (GAC) program, the requirements are a little different (explained below).

General Project Experience

  • You must have worked on projects for at least 12 months (2,000 hours) in the last 5 years.
  • If you already hold a PMP® or PgMP® certification, this requirement is automatically satisfied.

Agile Project Experience

  • You need 8 months (1,500 hours) of experience working on agile teams or using agile methods in the last 3 years.
  • These agile hours are in addition to the general project hours above.

Agile Training

  • You must complete 21 contact hours of training in agile practices before you can apply.
  • Training can be classroom, virtual, or self-paced as long as it’s structured learning.

Special Case: GAC-Accredited Degree Holders

  • If your degree is from a PMI-recognized Global Accreditation Center (GAC) program:
    • You don’t need the 12 months (2,000 hours) general project experience; it’s waived.
    • You still need the 1,500 agile hours within the last 3 years.
    • Your training requirement increases to 35 contact hours instead of 21.

PMI - ACP Certification & Exam

To obtain the PMI-ACP certification, a project manager must meet certain requirements and pass a 120 multiple-choice question exam. You can prepare for and take the exam in English, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Prerequisites:

  • Secondary degree
  • 12 months of general project experience within the last 5 years. A current PMP® or PgMP® will satisfy this requirement but is not required to apply for the PMI-ACP.
  • 8 months of agile project experience within the last 3 years.
  • 21 contact hours of training in agile practices.

Certification:

  • The certification exam has 120 multiple-choice questions and you have three hours to complete it.

To maintain and renew your credential, you must:

  • Earn 30 Professional Development Units (PDUs) in agile topics within each three-year cycle
  • Report these PDUs through PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) system
  • Pay the renewal fee to keep your certification active

If you do not meet these requirements, your certification status will first move to suspended and will eventually expire.
