CSM Certification Course Overview

Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM) certification is offered by Scrum Alliance to practitioners who have successfully completed a 2-Day CSM classroom training course and demonstrate their understanding through the CSM test.

The designation of Certified ScrumMaster® is offered by Scrum Alliance. Scrum Alliance is a non-profit membership organization that supports the adoption and effective use of Scrum. There are over a quarter million CSMs worldwide.

Anyone interested in becoming a Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) offered by Scrum Alliance, needs to fulfil the following requirements –

  • The first step is to attend a Certified ScrumMaster workshop conducted by a Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST®) approved by Scrum Alliance. Usually, the workshop is a 2 day long (or 14-16 hour) in-person course or live-online course taught by a CST. Till recently, a 2-day long classroom training was the only available option. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Scrum Alliance has temporarily approved CSTs to conduct live-online classes so that participants can attend the CSM training from the safety and comfort of their homes without needing them to attend physically. The CSM training will teach the attendees about the Scrum framework and how to become a successful Scrum Master.
  • After the training, the candidate needs to successfully clear the online CSM exam. The CSM exam will assess the candidate’s understanding of the CSM® Learning Objectives. Upon successfully passing the CSM test, the candidate will be offered the title of CSM by Scrum Alliance and the candidate will be able to download and print the CSM certificate.

Certified ScrumMaster Certification & Exam

There are no eligibility criteria set for the Certified ScrumMaster certification. Any professional looking to further his career in management can attend the course and attempt the test. However, each participant is expected to have some basic knowledge of Agile/Scrum. We recommend reading the Official Scrum Guide prior to attending the CSM workshop.

Following are the steps involved in the certification process:

  • Attend a two-day CSM training course conducted by a Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST®) or receive in person coaching from a Certified Agile Coach (CAC) for a minimum of 25 hours
  • Upon completing the two-day (16 hour) CSM course, the trainer will create an account for you on Scrum Alliance website, where you will be able to take the CSM test. The CSM Test is a non-proctored online test and you will be able to take the test online from any computer in the world from the comfort of their home, work, or other location.
  • Once you pass the exam you will be certified as a CSM. Also a CSM license agreement needs to be accepted and the Scrum Alliance membership profile needs to be completed.

CSM Exam Format:

  • 50 multiple-choice questions
  • Time limit is 1 hour
  • Passing score is 74%
  • Non-proctored online exam
  • You will not be able to pause the test, but questions can be bookmarked to answer later during the 60 minute time limit.
  • Test Language: English, Spanish (Castilian), Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Danish, Czech, and Russian.

The certification cost is included in the price of this course, hence you need not have to pay anything extra for the certification/examination. After receiving the initial welcome email from Scrum Alliance that contains the account activation link, you will have 90 days to complete the CSM test for free. Students are also given two free attempts to pass the CSM test. If you fail the test twice or complete it after 90 days, you will be prompted to pay a $25 USD.
