What does the CSPO certification involve?

If you are considering the Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) certification, you may want to know what the certification process actually involves.

Unlike certifications that require a separate exam, the CSPO certification focuses on completing an approved learning experience with a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) and developing an understanding of the Product Owner role.

The CSPO certification process involves the following:

1. Attend a CSPO Course

The first step is to attend a Certified Scrum Product Owner course taught by a Scrum Alliance Certified Scrum Trainer (CST).

The course is at least 16 hours and is delivered through an instructor-led live online format. The CSPO training introduces you to Scrum and the responsibilities, skills, and practices associated with effective Product Ownership.

If you are considering the course, review what you should know before enrolling in CSPO training, including the training requirements and what to expect from the program.

2. Learn the Fundamentals of Product Ownership

The CSPO course covers the knowledge and skills you need to understand the Product Owner role.

Key areas include:

• Product Owner responsibilities and core competencies
• Working with stakeholders and Scrum Teams
• Product vision, purpose, and goals
• Understanding customers and users
• Product discovery and validation
• Managing and ordering the Product Backlog
• Planning and forecasting
• Product value and product economics

These areas are based on the learning objectives established by Scrum Alliance for CSPO education.

3. Participate in Interactive Learning

CSPO course is not designed simply as a course where you listen to presentations and memorize concepts.

The learning experience can include discussions, exercises, practical activities, and opportunities to explore Product Owner situations. The specific activities and teaching approach can vary by trainer while covering the required learning objectives.

This allows you to discuss Product Ownership concepts, ask questions, and consider how different approaches can be applied in real situations.

4. There Is No CSPO Exam

One of the most important things to know about CSPO certification is that there is currently no test requirement.

Scrum Alliance states that successfully attending the required 16-hour CSPO course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST) results in certification.

This means you do not need to prepare for or pass a separate CSPO certification exam after completing the course.

5. Complete the Scrum Alliance Certification Process

After completing the course, you will receive a welcome email from Scrum Alliance with instructions to access your account and accept the license agreement for your CSPO certification.

Note: The information provided on this page is for general guidance and is based on the current Scrum Alliance certification requirements. Certification requirements and processes may change. Please refer to the official Scrum Alliance website for the latest information.

6. Continue Developing Your Product Owner Skills

CSPO is a starting point for developing your Product Ownership knowledge. Your learning does not have to end when the course is completed.

As you gain experience, you can continue developing your skills through professional learning, practical experience, and further Scrum Alliance education. Understanding the career relevance of CSPO certification can also help you consider how the credential fits into your professional goals.

For Product Owners looking to progress further, Scrum Alliance also offers advanced certifications such as Advanced Certified Scrum Product Owner (A-CSPO) and Certified Scrum Professional - Product Owner (CSP-PO).

Who Can Take the CSPO Certification?

CSPO is suitable for professionals who want to understand or strengthen their Product Owner skills. You do not need previous Product Owner experience or a specific professional background to attend the course or take the certification.

It can be relevant to:

1. Aspiring Product Owners
2. Current Product Owners
3. Product managers and business analysts
4. Project and delivery professionals
5. Professionals who work closely with Scrum Teams and stakeholders
6. Anyone interested in the business and product side of Scrum

What Happens After You Complete CSPO Training?

Once you have completed the required CSPO course and the Scrum Alliance certification process, you receive the Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) credential.

You can then use the credential to demonstrate your understanding of Scrum and the Product Owner accountability while continuing to build practical experience in Product Ownership.
