What Are the Eligibility or Experience Requirements for Scrum Master Certified (SMC®)?

If you are considering the Scrum Master Certified (SMC®) certification, you may wonder whether you need prior Scrum experience, a specific educational qualification, or another certification before you can pursue it.

There are no formal experience or educational prerequisites for SMC certification. You do not need to have worked as a Scrum Master or have prior Scrum experience to pursue this certification.

Do I Need Scrum Master Experience for SMC Certification?

No. Prior experience as a Scrum Master is not required to pursue SMC certification.

This means SMC can be considered by professionals who are:

• New to Scrum and looking to build structured knowledge
• Working with Agile or Scrum teams and want to strengthen their understanding
• Planning to take on Scrum Master responsibilities
• Already working as a Scrum Master and want to formalize their knowledge

It is important to remember that your level of experience does not determine whether you are eligible. What matters is whether the certification aligns with what you want to learn and your professional goals.

Do I Need SDC Certification Before SMC?

No. The Scrum Developer Certified (SDC®) certification is recommended, but it is not a prerequisite for SMC certification.

If you already have a basic understanding of Scrum, you may choose to pursue SMC directly. If you are new to Scrum, completing SDC first may provide useful foundational knowledge before moving on to understanding what the Scrum Master certification involves.

Is There an Educational Qualification Requirement?

No specific educational qualification is required for SMC certification.

Your academic background does not determine your eligibility. The certification can be considered by professionals from different educational and professional backgrounds who want to develop their knowledge of Scrum and the Scrum Master role.

Is SMC Suitable for My Experience Level?

You do not require a minimum number of years of Scrum or Agile experience to earn the SMC credential. However, your existing knowledge can influence how you approach the certification and whether SMC is right for you.

• If you are new to Scrum: You can still pursue SMC. Be prepared to learn Scrum terminology, roles, processes, and practices as part of your preparation.
• If you have some Agile or Scrum exposure: You may be able to relate the concepts you learn to your existing work experience and team environment.
• If you already work with Scrum teams: The certification can help you build on your practical understanding of Scrum and assess your knowledge against a structured certification framework.
• If you are already working as a Scrum Master: You can pursue SMC without needing to meet an additional experience requirement.

The key consideration is therefore not whether you have enough experience to qualify, but whether the SMC certification matches your current knowledge and professional objectives.

Do I Need to Complete the SMC Course Before Taking the Certification Exam?

The SMC online course and certification exam are separate components.

The SMC course is self-paced, giving you the flexibility to study according to your schedule. You have 180 days of access to the online course. You can use this period to study the course material and prepare for the certification exam.

Completing the course is not the same as earning the certification. Completing the course alone does not grant the SMC certification. You earn the certification by successfully passing the certification exam.

Is SMC Right for Me?

SMC credential may be relevant if your objective is to develop a stronger understanding of Scrum, prepare for Scrum Master responsibilities, or formalize knowledge you have gained through your work.

You do not need prior Scrum Master experience, a specific educational qualification, or SDC certification to pursue SMC. Your decision should be based on your current knowledge, learning objectives, and professional goals.
